Since 2016, Stella Maris has been proud to serve as a treatment partner to seven area police departments which offer Safe Passages services to individuals who contact police seeking assistance with addiction. Such individuals who ask the police department for help and have no active warrants will be immediately taken to a treatment facility such as Stella Maris and placed in a recovery program. No arrest. No jail.
Ohio’s Safe Passages program is based on the Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (P.A.A.R.I.) which was started in Gloucester, Massachusetts to support local police departments as they work with opioid addicts. Rather than arrest their way out of the problem of drug addiction, police departments committed to the Safe Passages program:
• Encourage opioid drug users to seek recovery.
• Help distribute life-saving opioid blocking drugs to prevent and treat overdoses.
• Connect addicts with treatment programs and facilities.
• Provide resources to other police departments and communities that want to do more to fight the opioid addiction epidemic.
Upon arrival at our facilities, the individual immediately receives a clinical assessment and is placed at the appropriate level of care.
